The definition that I have come by mostly is that they are organisms that break down complex organic molecules into simpler ones, in heterotrophs at any level digestion does the same. So why a new term 'decomposers'? I'm definitely missing out something.
They too eat dead organisms part of detritus? As I mentioned in the answer these organisms enable breakdown of the dead matter. Of course they are heterotrophs but they are different from other kind of heterotrophic interactions such as predation and parasitism. Other heterotrophs are not very efficient at turning over a large mass of organic matter like the decomposers. I read somewhere that the 'excreta' of microbes is rather formed of inorganic molecules something that can directly be absorbed by plants?
Comparing decomposers and detritivores are like comparing predator and carnivore, they are extrememly close in meaning but one is more focused on how they eat the other on what they eat.
Detritivores and saprotrophs in turn lose energy as heat through cell respiration. Energy is not recycled. It is constantly being supplied to ecosystems through light energy and then flows through the trophic levels. As it flows through the trophic levels energy is lost in feces, tissue loss and death. This energy from these losses is passed on to detritivores and saprotrophs. However the energy is then lost from the ecosystem as the remaining energy in the trophic levels and the energy in the saprotrophs and detritivores is lost through cell respiration in the form of heat.
As a result, energy needs to be constantly supplied to the ecosystems. Nutrients on the other hand are different as they constantly have to be recycled. Carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus are all examples of nutrients. There is only a limited supply of these as they are not resupplied to the ecosystems like energy. Detritivores: Invertebrate insects such as beetles, flies, butterflies, mites, slugs, snails, earthworms, millipedes, and woodlice are known as detritivores.
Crabs, lobsters, sea stars and sea cucumbers are some marine detritivores. Decomposers: Bacteria and fungi are saprophytes.
