Why is first robotics important

This is a great way for them to practice synthesizing technical ideas for a technically diverse group. At the end of the competition, the judges give out various awards for things like community outreach and excellence in engineering. Knowing how to communicate technical details is a daily part of my job at Atomic. The game that the robots play changes every year, but the competition structure is always three teams vs.

Frequently, games are designed with several different ways to score points. In the game, for example, there were goals on the ground, goals in the air, and obstacles that you crossed for points.

In general, some teams focus on one area, while others try to be good at every area. This creates an interesting problem when multiple teams have the same skills. As a student, my focus was to find how my team could score the most points and win.

My mentor had different priorities — he wanted to make sure everyone could contribute by doing what they designed their robot to do. He felt strongly that every team should get to show off the work and time they put into designing and building their robot to do something well. I would often get frustrated and disagree with him when we lost.

It was a funny thing to do, and it showed his desire to look out for everyone, not just ourselves and our score. One of the rules is that you only get six weeks to build the entire robot. Teams then design, build, test, and practice driving their robots to be ready for official regional FRC competitions which begin in late February. The top performing teams at the regional events are invited to the World Championships in late April, held at two sites in Detroit and Houston.

Off-season events use the same game and fields from the most recent FRC official competition. But the teams also enjoy the friendly competition, seeing old friends and friendly rivals , and sharing the fun and excitement of FIRST robotics with new friends and families in our communities!

The competition begins with qualification matches, with a match running about every minutes. One alliance has red bumpers on their robots, the other alliance uses blue bumpers. Watch the video below of a match from the most recent FRC season game:. Each team in the competition competes in randomly assigned qualification matches depends on the total number of teams in the competition , with different alliance partners and opponents in each match.

For our society to be as productive as it can be, it must be as innovative as it can be. Investing in programs that encourage young people to develop related skills is one of the most important investments our society can make. We are a registered charity, and we are a volunteer-led and volunteer-run organization with a solid track record of success.

Skip to content Our mission Our mission is to inspire young people to pursue further studies and careers in the field of science, technology and engineering. Our motivation We believe that as a society we face enormous challenges, and that to confront these challenges, we will need the full benefit of the energy, talent and dedication of our next generation of scientists, engineers and technologists.

We expect, require and reward on-field and off-field conduct that models the best values of professional respect and courtesy. This is an important real world skill. We make it clear that our most prestigious awards are our judged awards. We deliberately seek judges of considerable standing and seniority e.
